How a title comes back

  1. Recover

Failing media are imaged at the lowest level the hardware allows, read several times and never written to.

  2. Verify

Every image is checksummed on arrival and re-verified on a rolling schedule, so that any change, however small, is caught.

  3. Describe

Archivists record what each title is, where it came from, what was lost and on what terms it can be shown.

  4. Keep it running

Software runs in emulation on the machine it was made for. Everything else is migrated to formats that will still open in fifty years.
